Summer Work: Drawing Project Research

Tim Knowles

The first project I have started researching is the Drawing Project which makes you consider your surroundings and movement when drawing.

The first artist I have chosen to research is Tim Knowles. This is the first time I've seen this person's work and I like it almost instantly. I like how the technique of drawing is the main subject of the work and how creative and unique his techniques are.

For example; in 2009 Tim used this helmet to guide himself whilst walking through a city and the used the video to draw his route on the wall of the exhibition. Because of being guided by the wind he would be blocked buy buildings and railings and these can be seen in his illustration. I like this technique because if you were to do it again you would have a different experience and outcome.

Another example of how natural influences are used in Tim's work is his series of Tree Drawings. The perfectly titled series consists of drawings made by trees by attaching pens to the end of the branches and letting the wind move the branches against a canvas, creating a simple but abstract illustration. I think this technique is very original and creative, but comparing the 2 techniques I have researched I prefer the wind helmet because it requires more interaction with the artist.

In conclusion, I feel like I have been inspired by Tim Knowles to try using more interesting drawing techniques in my work. I think that even if the outcome is less than impressive, if the technique is interesting enough it will make up for the poor quality drawing.
